Cannabis Pilot Trials

The purpose of this bill is to create a legal basis for the implementation of The aim of this bill is to create a legal basis for carrying out scientific pilot trials with cannabis that are limited in terms of location, time and subject matter, in order to gain knowledge about the effects of the regulated use of cannabis for non-medical purposes.

Status: The Federal Council published the ordinance on cannabis pilot trials on 31 March, and it will enter into force in mid-May. Applications for pilot trials can then be submitted to the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). Concrete trial projects will probably start in 2022.

Since 2005, there have been many discussions whether experimental projects with actually prohibited hemp (1 % THC and more) should and could be carried out. Now the parliamentary consultations on this have been concluded in September 2020.
